A Busy Practice Owner’s Guide To Goal Setting

– Sian Burton

Are you stuck on a treadmill of long days, working weekends, with little time for family or for yourself?

Are you constantly wondering if It is possible to work less, be there for your family yet still have a profitable business that you enjoy?

It’s time to be brave and set a stake in the ground and say courageously “this is what I want for my business”.  However, reality soon sets in, as knowing what you want is very different to knowing how to achieve it.

Welcome to a busy practice owner’s guide to goal setting!

Don’t worry, I know you are busy and the last thing you need is something else on your endless to-do list.  So I am going to break it down into a few steps that are achievable.

Step 1 – Write it down

If you don’t know what you’re trying to create, you have no chance of creating it. This is why goal setting is essential. Visualise what you want and find yourself a book where you can write your goals and review them regularly. I truly believe that writing goals down works. In fact, there are hundreds of studies to confirm this. The act of writing helps cement these goals into your brain, assisting you to grow and prosper bringing you one step closer to achieving your goals.

Step 2 – Change your mindset

It is common for people I work with to resist to committing their goals to paper. Usually this is due to fear. When you write goals down, they become real, and when they become real, there’s a fear of missing them and feeling like a failure as you set a goal and didn’t reach it.

I also find many people are scared of growth as it can cause pain. There is the mindset that growth requires sacrifice required from you and your family.  So while you logically know you are capable of more and have potential, you are fearful of what that’s going to cost you.

So, how do you move past this?

Step 3 – Think Big

It’s time to think outside the box. Dream as big as you can. As women, we are conditioned to think small, to keep ourselves small and to put everybody else ahead of us.

Do you dream of

  • Working 9-to-5 and making half a million dollars a year?
  • Growing your practice to 10+ staff?
  • Working only 4 days a week and having school holidays off?
  • Choosing to work with clients that bring you joy instead of clients that just pay the bills?

I want you to know that all of that is possible and is achieved by women like you.

You can have the business of your dreams, work less and be there more for your family. You just need to believe in yourself AND write down these goals.
